Dear Volunteer Friends,

The day is drawing near...when the snow will disappear! The very thought, brings a smile to my face.

Our march towards building PHOC continues. Will you be a part? The new lodge expansion continues to move along. The interior is now painted (thank you to Ken Starling and crew) and the contractor will be laying the flooring tomorrow. Plan now for March 28th, our Maple Syrup Open House when we plan to open the new building...and highlight the great work done by the Wiles family and their volunteers in the sugar shack.

Much needs done as indicated by the list below.

Have a great week friends.

For Christian Camping,

Scott Hall
Director

Be sure to check out our needs list below. We will be listing camp needs at the bottom of the page in each issue of Plugged In. Perhaps someone in your network of churches and friends can help.

Do you know anyone who might like to receive this volunteer newsletter? Send us their e-mail address and we'll get them subscribed. They can always unsubscribe at a later date if they want.

What is Plugged In?
Plugged In
is your Volunteer Newsletter for Pleasant Hill Outdoor Camp!  Our goal with this weekly publication is to keep you, a valued volunteer, informed and up to date on all of the happenings at camp and ways you might want to get "Plugged In".

Outpost Renovations- Contact Gregg Short if you can help.
With a very generous donation, we will be tackling the shower house at Outpost. It needs a complete overhaul. We have two volunteers from our Board of Trustees who will be working on design, but when the time comes, we will need help doing the work. Outpost is a special part of the camp, and preserving it is important. Willing hands of all skills invited.

Pancake Flippers Needed! - NEW
As you know, our plan is to open the new lodge addition at our annual Maple Syrup Open House which is scheduled for March 28th. With the new lodge addition we are going to approach our pancake breakfast a little differently, setting up griddles in about 4 locations across the buidling with a central "fixings" area in the middle with our pure maple syrup etc... So, we need volunteers who would be willing to attend a griddle for a couple of hours and flip pancakes. Can we get you to help? The date again is March 28th starting at 10am. We'll provide the pancake batter of course but if you happen to have a griddle, all the better. Contact Scott at director@phoc.org if you can help bless our community and church families with a free pancake breakfast.

Painting and Clear Coat - NEW
The painting inside the new lodge expansion is about finished. A huge thank you to Ken Starling and his crew for their help. (If you need a home painted, contact Ken Starling at Wooster 1st. That was a free plug born of our appreciation!)

Next, we'll need to be clear coating the rest of the building exterior and just a bit of the remaining interior. When we have a date set for more, we'll let you know.

Mower and Tractor Maintenance- Do you have these skills? We need you!
Believe it or not, spring will be in in less than a month. If you have a way with engine and equipment maintenance and could help we would appreciate it. Our mowers and tractors will need oil changed, blades sharpened, filters changed, tires checked and more to get ready for the mowing season. It is important that we take good care of the equipment God has provided. Can you help?

INSIDE STUFF FOR WINTER!

Curtains (Norwalk Presbyterian is looking at how they can help. Who do you know that might have access to fabric?)
Updating our cabin curtains has been on our agenda for years, but without some good sewers and the needed material, we have been at a stand still. Are you handy with a sewing machine? Would your church be interested in donating some material? Come on down to camp for the day and plug in your machines. We'll be glad to provide a good lunch. Or if you like, gather a group together in your area. Contact the camp if interested.

DON'T FORGET

Got a Camper or RV?- ALWAYS ROOM FOR MORE!
Don't forget that we have 4 new full hook up RV sites available for volunteers. If you would like to spend the summer, a week, or even a few days at camp this summer, we can "hook" you up. Various jobs, including tractor mowing, kitchen and office support will need done. Give it some thought, and then give us a call!

Trail Maintenance-
Underway! By summer 2010 we should have well marked and mapped trails. Thanks to Bob Haugh, Ed Steele, and Steve Young for taking time to help with this project!

Coordinators Needed
Are you good at pulling together resources, making phone calls and organising people? Maybe you'd like to help by coordinating volunteers. We'll keep you posted on the projects going on around camp and you can help pull people together to achieve the task. Sound good? Give us a call.

Ropes Course Assistance
Volunteer your time to assist trained instructors on our High Ropes Course. The technical stuff will be taken care of; you'll help in a support role (on the ground!). Young and old welcomed to inquire.

Small Engine Maintenance
Small engine repair and maintenance is always a challenge. We need mower blades sharpened, oil and filters changed, and general care of equipment especially during summer. If you've been gifted with the ability to maintain equipment consider volunteering some time to come down to camp and work on our equipment. We have mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, and riding equipment that needs cared for. Weed eaters recently repaired, but there is more to be done.

Other Ways to Get Plugged In
-Wood cutting for Maple Syrup Season and firewood for this winter
-There is a tree or two that needs removed around camp
-Kitchen and cook help needed for fall retreats, summer help appreciated too.

Dear Volunteer Friends,

Thanks to all who have stopped out and helped in recent weeks. It is greatly appreciated. Please keep Jerry Messenger in your prayers as he suffered an injury to his thumb while splitting wood for the camp last week.

We plan to have a rejuvenated outpost facility by Memorial day of 2010. If you are interested in helping once we are ready to start with the hammers let us know. Once the winter weather breaks, we'll need to work fast to get it all completed. Reply to this e-mail if interested in this or any other project listed below.

Mark your schedules now for our annual fall Volunteer Work day on Saturday, October 3rd. I anticipate that we will focus much of the day's energy on wood cutting and splitting to help with the Maple syrup operations, though the traditional shut down of Outpost and the beach will need completed as well. More details on that forthcoming in future additions of Plugged In.

You are all a blessing and we appreciate your investment in your camp. Lives are being touched thru the summer camp and retreat programs. For an example of some recent feedback from a parent, click here. Your work and commitment makes this possible.

New! Painting
To keep our bathrooms in the cabins fresh, we paint the floors at least once per year. It makes this much cleaner and more pleasing on the eyes. We have the paint and rollers on site. Find a friend and come on out to camp for a day.

Window Work- In Progress, Thanks Don!
A single pane window in Genesis Lodge has been broken. It will need a new pane cut to order and glazed in. Not a difficult job but one that requires attention to detail. No ladders needed. It is easily accessible from the lodge deck. Can you help? Give us a call.

Trim Painting for Oak Cabin
The repairs on Oak are nearly completed and we need to re paint the trim. If you are hand with a paint brush come on out. We'll have paint and brushes ready. Need to be able to use a step ladder. Give us a call if interested.

Outpost Renovations- Join the Team!
Abilities in carpentry, electrical, plumbing and finish work needed too. Call the office at 419 938-3715 if you would like to join this team.

Trail Maintenance
We have an interested person...can you team up with them!
Our hiking trails are a treasure, yet we have not been able to keep up with the marking and maintenance. We could use help re mapping the trails, accessibility and clearing. If you would like to head up this project, or just participate, give us a call and ask for Scott.

Tar for a Roof
We have a mobile home on the property that needs the roof tarred. If interested, give us a call and we will put the materials together for you.

Arrow Repair
Yep, you read that right. The arrows we use for archery during summer camp are expensive, but can be repaired for little money. We can provide you with the fetching, cement, knocks and tips. Each repaired arrow saves the camp $2.50. Contact the director if you can help in this area. director@phoc.org

Tractor Mowing
Need some time to think?  No push mowing involved. You'd be surprised at how relaxing some time on the tractor can be.  If you need some time to get away from it all, give us a call.  We'd be glad to have the equipment ready for you to mow.

RV Sites Finish Work
Our RV sites are now fully functional. In fact, we had a camper hooked up there over last week. However, there is plenty of finish work to be done. Chainsaw operators and wood haulers needed. Come hook up and spend a couple of days cutting!

Small Engine Maintenance

Volunteer Banquet
Stay tuned for the date for our next volunteer banquet.  You won't want to miss this evening of good food and fellowship.  It's our opportunity to thank each volunteer for your selfless service!  Date to be announced in late summer

Ropes Course Assistance
Volunteer your time to assist trained instructors on our High Ropes Course.  The technical stuff will be taken care of;  you'll help in a support role (on the ground!). Young and old welcomed to inquire.

A Letter from a Camper Parent,

"I just wanted to tell you how much our daughter, Emma, enjoyed herself this summer at your camp. This was her, our, first experience and it couldn't have been better! She loved her counselors and the entire experience.
When she first approached us about a summer camp, I was hesitant and overwhelmed. I searched for camps and yours stood out. You answered my questions and your staff helped me with payments; all of which was appreciated.
When we arrived to drop her off, the check in procedure was helpful and easy. Everyone made us feel welcome.
While she was there, we were able to catch up via the pictures your staff took which made us feel connected. We also liked the ability to purchase things for her online.
When we picked her up she couldn't stop talking about how much fun she had.
Thanks so much!"
