Purpose

First Presbyterian Pre-School has been in operation since the fall of 1985. The purpose of the pre-school is to provide a Christian atmosphere in which children will be encouraged to explore God's world through a multi-sensory learning experience, using a developmental approach.

Staff

The pre-school is staffed by teachers and classroom assistants. Teachers in the program should have a two-year associate degree,  a CDA (Child Development Associate) Credential or equivalent experience. They are required to have appropriate experience in working with preschool children.

Class Size

The adult-child ratio will be a maximum of 1:10 with classes containing up to 20 children. The school is licensed to legally operate and service 79 pre-school and 25 school age children per day.

Curriculum

The curriculum will be a structured, well-planned program that is flexible enough to accommodate the individual needs of the child through the unique style of the teacher. Goals will be enhanced through a variety of interest centers to provide child-centered, age appropriate activities, as well as thematic units that offer content learning interrelated with the activities.

The curriculum will emphasize the following areas:

Spiritual Development
  • To develop an appreciation of and response to God's love for them.

  • To experience prayer as talking with God.

  • To encourage a growing faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, experiencing that faith on their individual development level.

Social Development
  • To encourage the child to be aware of his/her own behavior and how it affects others.

  • To aid the child in thinking about solutions and alternatives for solving conflicts.

  • To provide experiences that will help develop empathy, cooperation, and interaction skills.

Physical Development

  • To explore one's own body through the use of creative movement, dance and outdoor play.

  • To provide opportunities for gross motor development, following the natural progression to fine motor development.

  • To develop the child's responsibility for their own personal care such as eating, dressing and toileting.

 Emotional Development

  • To foster positive self-regard through the use of praise, encouragement, and positive reinforcement.

  • To assist the child in accepting negative emotions such as anger, resentment, jealousy, fear, etc., and channeling these emotions into appropriate and positive modes of expression through work and play.

Cognitive Development
  • To sharpen the child's ability to select and gather information, heightening their awareness of objects and activities around them.

  • To assist the child in conceptual development through stimulating and meaningful activities.

  • To help children apply gathered knowledge in solving problems and understand cause-effect relationships through guidance, encouragement, and modeling.

  • To provide opportunities for the child to express his/her creativity.
